Both/And is a collection of essays by trans and gender-nonconforming writers of color, edited by Denne Michele Norris, editor-in-chief of Electric Literature. It’s a book about living in the space between categories, and refusing to be squeezed into just one. A book about being more than one thing deserved a cover that feels like a celebration.
The title already carried the whole idea, so the lettering had to feel like that too: two words that need each other, linked by a slash that works less like a wall and more like a bridge. Nothing about it is quiet or apologetic. It’s loud, confident and a little bit flashy, the way you’d write your name if you were done asking for permission. The soft glow around it came from wanting the cover to feel warm, like being seen, and not just bold.
